Live With Kelly and Ryan Review – Did they make the right choice for new co-host?

One of my favorite shows to watch is Live with Kelly, or as it has been known recently, Live with Kelly and Michael, and Live with Regis and Kelly. I try to catch this show whenever I can in the morning as it is always a delight to see Kelly and the different guests each week.

Over the past few months, Kelly was the only permanent host and each day they had a different co-host join her on the show. Usually they were other celebrities and well known entertainers. I enjoyed this rotating format as it made the show a little more interesting knowing there would be different people featured each week.

Finally after months without a permanent co-host, they announced Ryan Seacrest as the new official co-host who would be joining Kelly. The announcement was met with mixed reviews based on what I saw from the fan reactions online. I was a surprised by the choice considering they had a lot of great candidates to choose from and several that were clearly fan favorites.

Personally I would have liked to see one of the others chosen as the new permanent co-host. My top pick would have been Fred Savage. He was very likable on the show and had a great energy and chemistry with Kelly. I also think a great choice would have been Richard Curtis who was the teacher who made it on as a co-host through one of their promotions. He did such a great job, they asked him back several more times.

Another good pick would have been Scott Wolf. He also had great chemistry with Kelly and really fit the morning talk show role well in terms wholesomeness and sense of humor. I even would have liked to see her husband Mark Consuelos be the co-host, but I know that could be difficult because it would mean the two would be spending a lot of time together each week.

Nevertheless, Ryan Seacrest was chosen as the new co-host. Personally I feel kind of indifferent about this choice. He has a lot of experience in similar roles from his days on American Idol and from being on the radio. I think the producers of the show figured he would be a safe choice to fill the role of co-host. For me, he was definitely not my first choice, but I think he will do ok.

So far they have had 2 weeks with the new format of Live with Kelly and Ryan. Overall I think Ryan is doing ok. Honestly, I don't think the chemistry between them is quite right and I don't think a morning show like this is the best fit for Ryan. I will still tune in for Kelly because as I like to think, she is a national treasure. For now, Ryan will have to do as co-host. I would be interested to see if there is any trend in the ratings either up of down due to this change.

What do you think of this choice to make Ryan Seacrest the new co-host of Live? Feel free to leave comments below.

Update: It has been a couple months and I still feel that they should have picked someone else to be co-host. This was very apparent the past 2 weeks where the first week Ryan was hosting with guest co-hosts and the next week Kelly was hosting with guest co-hosts. The week where it was just Ryan, I found myself thinking, "Why am I even watching this?" Then the next week when Kelly came back and had different co-hosts, it was like energy and excitement had been restored to the show. I will still tune in here and there, but I hope some changes are on the way to bring the show back to how it was.

Update: 5-21-18
It's been a little over a year since Ryan stepped in as permanent co-host and overall I think there has been improvement since when he first joined. I think he has settled into the role and the chemistry between he and Kelly has gotten better. I still like when they have guest hosts like when Mark Consuelos joins Kelly at the desk, but overall I think Ryan does a fine job now as the co-host.

  1. I personally enjoy Ryan for many reasons but the main one is that he doesn't let Kelly make all the comments about her or something that happened in her life. I think they have great chemistry.
I really enjoyed Michael, I didn't like all the blame he received when it was announced he was leaving, there were executives, including Gilman, that must have know an should have stood up for him after Kelly made her feelings made quite clear. Good Luck Ryan, your an assent to the show.

  2. Very disappointing choice. Now that he is the co-host, I don't really care if I tune in or not. He does not add any energy to the show.

  3. I like them both, but I don't see any chemistry between them. It's just not as entertaining as it once was. I don't tune in anymore.

  4. No chemistry at all - Ryan looks at Kelly like she is an idiot and Kelly tries too hard to appear enthusiastic towards Ryan. She is drowning with Ryan! Throw her a lifeline and bring back one of her fan favorites for co-host. Ryan is a great guy and all his other projects work brilliantly for him, just not this one.

  5. No chemistry. Fred Savage was awesome as were others. It's boring with Ryan.

  6. I don't like the choice of co-host. I do not have anything against Ryan but he would not been my choice as permanent co-host; I went from intentionally seeking to watch show to pure avoidance. It is not a good mix. One, it was already too mucb Ryan on tv. It is like putting Steve Harvey with Kelly. I do not dislike Harvey but I can do without seeing him on every channel doing various shows. There is room for others and Ryan just don't make the cut for me. I agree with other commentors, no chemistry. And not trying to be offensive but it is too much "blonde" hair; looks weitd. I never thought that would matter to me but...it is obvious it does. #SorryNoLongeraWatcher

  8. Ryan not a good choice, I liked Jerry O'Connell better he got up and danced with the trivia dancers, get rid of both of them and call it live with JerryandFred, that would be awesome, I've had enough of it... Boring.

  9. Not at all impressed with Ryan Seacrest. Does not add anything to show. Where is the fill in cohost that was an everyday "joe". I think he was a teacher.
Very sick of shows being previously recorded. It is "LIVE" with Kelly and Ryan. He has his hand in too many things. GET RID OF RYAN. Starting to dislike show because of him.

    1. I liked the teacher too. So many people did. Either he couldn't do it or the higher ups figured they wouldn't get as much publicity for a no name. I think he would have done well. I stopped watching the show when Ryan came on.

  13. I sometime feel like Ryan is trying to sit in Kelly's chair...he leans over so far everytime Kelly looks over to say something to him, he's right in her face. Ryan Seacrest makes me sick...can't stand him!! You're already all over the place Seacrest, go away!! Why in the world did they pick him? Fred Savage or Jerry O'Connell were sooooo much better!! They were actually funny...Seacrest is a smart-ass know-it-all!! Don't care to watch anymore!! Sorry Kelly!

  14. Kelly thinks she's so knowledgeable about everything, she's the person that has a story for everything you talk about, but hers is more interesting,so she thinks , she does the cutting off of Ryan more than she did Michael, she just talked down to him. Also all the sexual references she makes are embarrassing, does she go back and watch herself, and her jokes she tries to make are stale, and stop hanging out with Andy Cohen, she imitates how he talks , just go back and watch them together. You come acoss as a phony person, check yourself!

  15. I have watched LIVE since it was Regis and Kathy Lee. Watch Regis and Kelly. Then Kelly & Michael. I enjoyed their chemistry although sometimes I didn't want to hear all their workouts. I watched for a year with different co-hosts(when I liked who was on). I was in NYC in April 2016 and tried so much to get tickets ahead of time - no go. I took a picture of Kelly and Michael at Madame Troudeau. Right after that Michael left the show. When I heard it was Ryan Seacrest I stopped watching. BAD CHOICE. Why didn't you listed to viewers suggestions. I haven't watch since and have desire too. To tell you the truth I really got tired of Kelly too. Miss you Regis

  16. Ryan Seacrest is a radio personality , it shows how he presents himself , no tie and sometimes unshaven , runners shoes too , ... I think it was a choice Kelly made herself ... and we all know about her ... please bring back Regis ...he is a professional not a flunkie or an radio show host

  17. i am having problems with Kelly acting like Micheal was never a co-host on the show. She mentions Regis but never Micheal. Was she that hurt over his leaving. She is talking it too personal. If i noticed , Ia m sure other people have too. Get over it Kelly!!!!

  18. I dont think it matters who the co-host is. Kelly seems overly excited to sit close to all her co-host. The show is boring in my opinion.

  19. Personally I find Kelly very boring when she talks. She drags all her sentences out and cant seem to get to the point. I find that she wants to do all the talking and cuts Ryan off a lot. He must be doing something right because he is all over the place. They are ok together.
