It went to a woman in Dorchester, M...Yes, they did. It went to a woman in Dorchester, Mass., who shopped at Star Market, a New England chain. She was selected from more than 164 million entries in the "last chance" random drawing.

This was announced via press release from the Shaw's/Star Market division of Albertson's on June 23, and I found it last week. (I attempted to send this message last week but it never got posted, possibly a glitch on my end.) Unlike all the publicity on the main Monopoly game website, the news release unaccountably uses the winner's full name; I will refer to her here only as April C.

What's clear from the disclosure that there were "only" 164 million entries is that your odds of winning $1 million via the "last chance" random drawing are far, far more favorable than winning the prize by matching game pieces. Clearly only the most dedicated players bothered to go online an enter the codes. If these shoppers entered an average of 50 codes each (remember, the instant winners and Fandango tokens would not count), that means only about 3.2 million people were vying for the $1 million. (50 may be an overcount, but you see my point.)

The press release let one additional cat out of the bag, quoting the Shaw's CEO as saying there were $103 million worth of prizes awarded nationwide in the game. This presumably includes all the free donuts and aluminum foil, not sure if they're counting the cents-off coupons though. Either way, that's only a little more than half the $200 million advertised as the total value of all the prizes up for grabs.

Jeff R.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7396535752851450625.post-46041274753391839352017-07-03T16:51:56.013-05:002017-07-03T16:51:56.013-05:00Any word on whether they actually gave away the to...Any word on whether they actually gave away the top prize like they said they would?Suzannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00117333167904518647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7396535752851450625.post-69749921521581902712017-06-12T22:58:32.624-05:002017-06-12T22:58:32.624-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Suzannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00117333167904518647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7396535752851450625.post-69141600013317451712017-06-09T13:07:09.467-05:002017-06-09T13:07:09.467-05:00Jeff....Always read your summations...good job!Jeff....Always read your summations...good job!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7396535752851450625.post-20240339012159538902017-06-03T23:58:42.628-05:002017-06-03T23:58:42.628-05:00Your analyses is always welcome, to my mind, Jeff ...Your analyses is always welcome, to my mind, Jeff R.

But LOL at "the prizes SUPPOSEDLY AVAILABLE."Limerentnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7396535752851450625.post-81717297326290671452017-06-03T19:19:26.097-05:002017-06-03T19:19:26.097-05:00Had fun playing this year and will be smarter next...Had fun playing this year and will be smarter next year. Not sure if anyone is sti...FINAL REPORT ON WINNERS

Not sure if anyone is still here -- probably not many! -- but for posterity, here goes:

According to the latest accounting on the game web site, no one won any of the six $1 million prizes by matching pieces on the game board, so a single prize will be awarded by random drawing under the "last chance" (aka "2nd chance") rules. This will be done on June 14.

This makes at least three years in a row that the million-dollar prize has not been claimed. I do not have information from previous years. It may be that the million-dollar prize has never been claimed through matching markers. I believe the game is in its 10th year.

Here is how the other top prizes wound up, according to the game web site:

$100,000 cash: 2 out of 15 prizes claimed
Home makeover: 3 out of 25 claimed plus 14 through bonus drawing
$35,000 vehicle: 4 out of 25
$20,000 tuition: 4 out of 50, plus 14 in bonus drawing
4-wheeler: 8 out of 50
Family vacation: 21 out of 50, plus 14 in bonus drawing
$5,000 cash: 33 out of 50
$5,000 groceries: 23 out of 50
Gas grill: 48 out of 100
LED TV: 48 out of 100

Lessons learned: By requiring both a rare and semi-rare marker for the eight top prize categories (family vacation and up), parent company Albertsons makes the long odds of winning even longer. The number of bonus drawing winners is not always clear, but it appears that of the 221 top prizes, 42 were claimed through matching markers on the game board -- fewer than 20 percent of the prizes supposedly available.

Most shoppers probably do not have the time or intuition to come to trading/sharing sites like this one. So it's quite possible that whoever wound up with those six "ultra-rare" million-dollar markers didn't realize what they had, because the semi-rare piece never came to them. Or, given how labor-intensive this contest is, maybe they never even got around to opening the marker. Consider that only half of the tvs and gas grills were awarded, even though they required only one rare marker in addition to the three "common" ones almost every shopper collected.

One final thought, and then I'll go away for a year: I said in the very first post on this board that I didn't think the game was a scam or even terribly deceptive once you grasp the concept. I'm happy with the $15 in gift cards and free stuff I won. But it is...I'm not sure what the right word is...somewhat heartless, I guess.

What kind of a contest offers $6 million in top prizes and then says (essentially), we know that probably no one will win so we'll plan for a random drawing for a million, too? Why not have six ultra-rare markers without the need for a semi-rare one? Why not have a random drawing for all six top prizes if none are claimed? Why make the family vacation, worth a measly $10,000, so hard to win that fewer than half the prizes are claimed? Doubtless there is an algorithm somewhere in Albertson's game computers that tells them how much of the "$200 million in prizes and money-saving offers" they actually will have to dish out and what kind of increase in revenue they can expect along the way to balance this out. But surely there's a way to reduce the number of prizes, make them easier to win and still sell a little more Skippy and Simply Orange.

Thanks to Connected Isolation for the platform and to all who endured this blathering.Jeff R.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7396535752851450625.post-88522088365377053822017-05-30T23:12:07.363-05:002017-05-30T23:12:07.363-05:00I just found a semi-rare piece for the $1,000,000 ...I just found a semi-rare piece for the $1,000,000 prize. I have won about a thousand dollars in free grocery coupons, including a case of Huggies diapers, free batteries, and a very large bag of Purina dog food. I also won a $20 Domino's gift card and a $10 instant winner grocery gift card. By playing the Nickelodeon tickets, I won $86 in free personalized labels from Oliver's Labels. I did not play the board game at first, but then after a couple won $100K at the grocery store i shop in, I decided to start playing the game board. I won $100 in cash, mostly in $5 bills but also 2 $25 cash prizes. I also won $40 in $5 gift cards. Right now the site took down the list of winners, but if no one wins one of the 6 million dollar prizes, they are supposed to raffle it off June 12 as an annuity that pays $33K a year. They are also supposed to raffle off $40K to each of the 14 area divisions and also one trip to Hawaii. Based on what I have already won, I am pretty sure that this game is on the up and up and will grant a million dollar prize. The odds of winning the raffle are about 1 in 120 million. I based this estimate on the amount of bonus ticket winners they awarded electronically, and the rate at which people won them each week. they turned off the bonus tickets one weekend before they were supposed to stop distributing tickets. I got lucky in that my local store somehow got an extra pallet of tickets in and they were handing out entire boxes near the end because they did not know what to do with them all. I am already looking forward to next year. I hope it is as good or better!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7396535752851450625.post-47478713141510567222017-05-29T14:53:24.723-05:002017-05-29T14:53:24.723-05:00Hahaha just got this joke I have both too missing ...Hahaha just got this joke I have both too missing y-f and z-h just picked up four cans of salt got $5 grocery card Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7396535752851450625.post-7641746734710879042017-05-29T10:23:44.678-05:002017-05-29T10:23:44.678-05:00I have 8D87B, semi-rare for the $40,000 home makeo...I have 8D87B, semi-rare for the $40,000 home makeover.
