  1. Thanks once again to Connected Isolation for this info. By knowing the rare and semi-rare game pieces, you can play the game much smarter than others because you needn't wonder whether you have somehow stumbled across a “rare” winning piece without yet obtaining the corresponding “easy” pieces. This is enormously useful.

I’d like to share some additional observations and thoughts in hope of sparing at least some people a lot of grief. I posted similar remarks last year, and I apologize for going on at such length. I don’t think the game is a scam, nor is it terribly deceptive, either. What I noticed from the comments section last year, however, is that many shoppers were bitter at having nothing to show after collecting hundreds of game pieces at great cost, and I think those hard feelings ought to be avoidable. (Here, I’m going to refer to all 18 supermarket chains in the game as Albertsons, the parent company.)

The first thing to understand is that there are 2,325 stores in 34 states and the District of Columbia in the Monopoly game (source: FAQ page on Monopoly game site). Six of these stores will get the ultra-rare game pieces for a $1 million prize, so there is a 1 in 387 chance that your store is one of them.

It is important to know that none of the three $1 million prizes were awarded in 2016 or 2015 (I do not have information for previous years). This can be determined from the prize info posted on the Monopoly game site last year and from the 2016 game boards, which identified some of the 2015 winners. It also appears none of the then-$500,000 vacation homes were awarded in these two years. When I checked at the end of the game last year, only two of the 25 $100,000 prizes had been claimed. Even way down the line, I counted only 10 jetskis and 10 family vacations claimed of the 50 supposedly up for grabs.

The reason for this is that it is exceedingly difficult to obtain both the rare and semi-rare markers for the top prizes. The game is designed that way.

Albertsons seems to understand this is a problem and is “guaranteeing” at least one $1 million winner this year with a “last chance” drawing, open to those who enter codes online. The rules on the game website indicate it will be awarded only if NONE of the three $1 million prizes or three $1 million vacation homes are claimed.

Two more points, and then I’ll shut up.

The game is masterfully designed to make you think you are “just one away” from all of the smaller prizes. After collecting hundreds of markers, it is likely you will have everything required *except* the rare pieces for almost all of the prizes. Albertsons wants you to feel you’ve been lucky, that you’re “close” to winning, so you’ll go back and shop more. But you can have six of the eight $1 million game pieces or even three of the four $5 cash pieces and be NO CLOSER TO WINNING THAN YOU WERE BEFORE THE GAME STARTED. Imagine what a difference it would make if all those pieces simply read, “Sorry, this is not a winner.”

My last point is this: There is nothing you can do to significantly increase your chances of winning a top prize. Note I say “significantly.” There are 1,239,300,000 game tickets that will be distributed (that’s 1.2 billion). Only six of these will win a $1 million prize. According to the game odds chart, each game ticket gives you one chance in 413 million to win one of the two $1 million prizes. If my calculations are correct (and someone can check my math on this), having 1,000 tickets instead of 500 tickets improves your chances of winning a top prize by only about one-tenth of 1 percent. This is not a statistically significant edge.

So: You should not buy products you would not ordinarily buy just to get more tickets, or pay prices you would normally not pay. This may help you win one of the very low-value prizes, but it is unlikely to get you the $1 million.

The contest is designed to make you alter your shopping practices. But you’ve read all the way to the bottom of this message, and now you're too smart for that.

You make some good points about how hard it is to win the big prizes. I agree, even the small prizes are hard to win, for example the odds of winning the $5 prizes are just 1 in 1,549. It's fun to play but people need to keep in mind how difficult it is to win.

      Delete
    2. Thank you for your post! It is good to look at the astronomical odds of winning as it's so easy to get caught up into thinking you are close to big prize.

    3. Jeff- I like how thorough you are wig this game. Great analysis. I have never won anything but it is fun to play. It does divert me from shopping at other stores, while this game is on.
In just three trips I have filled out most of the board. I received 16 tickets my first trip by just stocking up on things I was going to get anyway.
Bonne Chance everyone. It's a fun game.

    4. I love your post, Jeff! I never seriously believed I would win one of the major prizes. But I was bitter last year about not winning a mere $5 gift card. And the free item coupons were all for things I didn't need nor usually bought. So far this year, I've got coupons for an 8oz tub of Lucerne sour cream and one large Haas avocado. Now THAT's something! :)

    5. Last year, all I won was an individual Redbox video rental from the online Monopoly. This year, I won a $5 Gift Card. Whoopie!

  3. I see they did make an effort to improve the game board design this year, but then made the game piece numbers more complex and to sort with more letters in them. The way they run the monopoly game is not fun at all with too much work and money spent needed play right and little to show for it in the end. I wish they would ditch the Monopoly style play altogether. Scratchers would be better. Either you win or you don't and you know right away.

  4. I believe that the semi rare and rare pieces will have a small check mark or an asterisk next to the game piece number. In 2013, when I played this last, the rare piece for the 5 dollar prize (or maybe it was just $2) had a small asterisk next to the piece number. The common ones did not. So if that's the case this year, just look for those asterisks and you know you've won something!!

    1. I am not aware of that, but I have heard people say that for the small prizes, often all four of the required pieces are on the same game ticket.

      Delete
    2. That was the way it was for our $5 winning game ticket. All four were on the same ticket. A few years ago, my brother had the same thing when he won a $5 prize. I think they do this to combat trading game pieces, since that would increase the number of winning payouts Albertson's would have to make.

  9. I have 20 people contributing to one board, and we have hit a $10 instant winner for groceries, lots of individual free products, and hundreds of coupons. They're out there. Good luck! PS: The board design is marketing genius. Notice that you can't "spin the board" and read the tag numbers in order to find your missing pieces. You count L-R inside each section, but then R-L when counting sections. Your brain cannot process this pattern quickly, and you end up viewing small images of the sponsor products over and over.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Unknown: You were undoubtedly given these game pieces by mistake. There is a completely separate game for employees, presumably to avoid a) the scandal that would ensue if an employee just happened to win the public game, and b) the disappointment of thousands of Albertsons employees being told they are ineligible to win. You might ask to trade them in.

  54. I just sold 8Z07G for $300 on ebay. It sold in a half hour, so if you have one, I'm sure you can get much more. I posted it for a Buy It Now of $500, and put in the parameters that I would automatically reject less than $200 and would automatically accept anything of $300 or more. I noticed that between this and another monopoly ticket website, there were ten people who posted they had 8Z07G. So it is semi-rare. If the game is saying there are three chances to win one million dollars, then I would predict there only three 8Z08H tickets in existence. Most likely, the person who bought it off me does not have a 8Z08H ticket. Many people just don't understand how these contests work. If you have a 8Z08H ticket, you would be able to get the others without much trouble or cost.

  55. I sold my 8Z07G piece on Ebay, but Ebay just stepped in and negated the sale. Turns out you can't sell lottery items on Ebay. Oh, well.

  67. This game is rigged. I had 24 tickets after buying all sorts of crap that offered them. Not one of them won a good prize at all!!!!! All I got was a freaking can of corn!!!!! I'm not expecting to win a $1000000 all the time, but at least a few hundred should be awarded with that many tickets. What a scam!!!!!

    1. I don't mean to sound harsh or anything but I have earned over 100 tickets since the beginning of the contest just buying the stuff I normally buy and I haven't won anything except a loaf of French bread, some sour cream and extra tickets. So, sorry to say 24 is not that many tickets at all. Just keep playing and enjoy it and if you do win something, be surprised. Good luck! ☺

  73. just a reminder, last year they said the same thing that if there were no winners they were going to randomly pick from the codes submitted online. Funny though that this never happened. If you want to know how winners are chosen. You have to work at 1 of the 3 Albertsons that the game creator owns. The one in Denver Colorado,Portland Oregon, and Seattle Washington have already had multiple winners of the $50,000 cash prize. The game creator gives winners to all the people at his stores. If you don't believe me have a look for yourself.

    1. Well, that's a conflict of interest. I'm surprised that more precautions weren't put in place to avoid casting the whole game in a dubious light. But yeah, I lean more towards thinking it's seamy how no one won any of the top prizes last year. Did they even print all of the winners' names in an outlet where the general public can access them easily? Even the Playmonopolyus website only features "A Sampling of Winners Photos in 2016." Same with Nathan's 100 Years promotion last year, you can't find a published list of complete winners anywhere. Seamy.

  75. The 16-character code on an instant winner piece won me 2 Monopoly Game Tickets on Your Next Visit. Except that I mis-typed one character (MNZ8... instead of M8Z8...). I put in the correct code, and it was still a winner for 2 Monopoly tickets. I wonder if my mis-typing the code (and thus entering it into my Code History) will invalidate that code for the person who actually gets that piece, or would it not matter because you have to submit the actual piece along with the printed prize form that matches the code, anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I wonder if each instant winner code is pre-assigned to win or not win something, or does the big cloud randomly determine whether or not it will win something only as people enter them online? I ask because I had 10 game pieces today and in entering them one after the other online. 4 of them ended up being Fandango tokens (1 was not a winner, 1 won 2 Monopoly pieces, and 4 were store coupons). I feel you have to put in codes at the right time to win anything, especially the "online jackpot." The codes don't mean anything until you are chosen to win whatever prize, at the moment you enter your code and press "Submit Code."
